What Is Phonics and How Does It Work?
Phonics teaches children how spoken English sounds connect with letters and spelling patterns. Instead of memorising every word, children learn a reusable strategy for reading unfamiliar words.
How phonics works
A child hears and identifies sounds, connects them with letters, and blends them from left to right. For example, /m/ + /a/ + /p/ becomes map. The reverse process—segmenting a word into sounds—supports spelling.

Strong teaching connects phonemic awareness, letter–sound knowledge, blending, decodable reading, segmenting, spelling, vocabulary, and comprehension. Each layer supports the next.
What a lesson can include
A focused lesson may review known sounds, introduce one pattern, practise blending, read a suitable text, and finish with spelling or writing. The pace should reflect the child’s response, not a fixed promise.
