How to Teach Phonics Blending
Blending means joining sounds in sequence until they become a word. A child moves from /s/ /u/ /n/ to sun without guessing from a picture.
Start orally
Use two or three continuous, clearly pronounced sounds and keep the gaps short. Ask the child to identify the resulting word before showing print.
Add letters
Point from left to right while saying each sound, then repeat the whole word naturally and connect it to meaning.
Move into text
Use short sentences or decodable books containing patterns already taught. Avoid words that require unexplained spellings too early.
Frequently asked questions
Why can my child say sounds but not blend?
Sound recall and blending are different skills. Oral blending with shorter gaps may help.
How long should home practice be?
Five to ten calm, focused minutes can be more useful than a long tiring session.
